Dual Mass Flywheels (DMF)
What is a dual mass flywheel?
A dual mass flywheel or DMF is designed to help smooth out the torque produced by an engine by increasing the kinetic energy stored on the input shaft side of the gearbox.
Boosting vehicle efficiency and driver comfort
The dual mass flywheel provides smoother and easier gear changes by filtering out vibrations between the engine and gearbox. Thanks to two independent flywheels connected via a bearing or bushing, including a damper system, a DMF protects the gearbox and the rest of vehicle against engine vibrations, improving driving comfort.
Valeo’s inner damper solution
At high engine speeds, the centrifugal load pushes the springs against the spring guides and creates friction, reducing the active number of coil springs, increasing the effective spring stiffness and reducing filtering capacity. In a Valeo DMF with inner springs, small straight springs are integrated into the drive plate which allow it to filter vibration.
Innovative tech for long travel
For demanding applications, such as RWD vehicles, it’s important to obtain a low level of vibration at the gearbox. To do this, Valeo’s Long Travel Damper (LTD) technology is integrated into the DMF, reducing perceived vibration and engine noise.
