Valeo Engine Management - Exhaust Gas Management

What technologies are used to reduce emissions in modern vehicles?

    How does exhaust management work?

An Overview of Exhaust Management Systems

As emissions standards become stricter over time, more systems are required to reduce emissions effectively. Today, a wide variety of systems work together to reduce harmful emissions like Nitrous Oxide (NOx) and particulate matter. In this 40-minute in-depth webinar, you’ll learn how exhaust gas treatment systems work.

    Exhaust Management System: The Basics

Environmental and health concerns due to low air quality in cities have driven the creation of the Euro emissions standards. As the requirements progressed over the years to the stringent Euro 5b standards, an array of sensors, valves, and other exhaust gas treatment systems are now necessary to attain low emissions. These systems either function as pretreatment (before Engine combustion) or post-treatment (post-combustion) methods to reduce a vehicle’s emissions.

Exhaust Management Systems - A look at Each System

You’ll discover each of these systems, including Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), and more. We’ll show you detailed diagrams which explain the functioning of each system. You’ll also see the different materials used for these parts and how their special properties help reduce emissions. You’ll learn the difference between passive and active regeneration of the diesel particulate filter and how to recognise when the system is in use.

    Evolution of Emissions Control Technology

Some exhaust gas treatment systems are recent additions, but even the systems which have been around for longer have changed. We’ll take a look at these evolutions and how they have increased efficiency while reducing harmful emissions. You’ll learn which components present on newer cars are now illegal to remove from your vehicle and will result in an MOT failure. You’ll discover which components are specific to certain manufacturers. We’ll also explore the AdBlue system common on more recent diesel vehicles.

    Troubleshooting

Emissions control systems may require intervention or even maintenance from time to time. We will detail common issues with systems like Exhaust Gas Recirculation valves. We’ll also go over common failures to help you troubleshoot problems before they result in a failure. We’ll provide recommendations for the best practices for handling exhaust gas treatment parts. You’ll also learn which systems can cause the vehicle to become immobilised if not properly maintained.
