Valeo Sensors - Camshaft and Crankshaft Sensors

Discover these little parts with big roles in keeping your engine running

What Are Camshaft and Crankshaft Sensors

An Overview of Valeo Camshaft and Crankshaft Sensors

What Are Camshaft and Crankshaft Sensors and How Do They Work?

Modern engines require a host of sensors to constantly monitor the engine and ensure ideal performance, efficiency, and compliance with emissions regulations. The sensors which measure the camshaft and crankshaft are especially important as they can prevent the engine from starting if they malfunction. In this 40-minute free webinar, we will introduce you to these two sensors.

What Is a Camshaft Position Sensor?

The camshaft position sensor measures the speed and position of the camshaft in real-time. You’ll discover the variety of sensor setups and designs and how they measure this data. We’ll explain how the cam position sensor works in a 4 cylinder engine and its close relation to the engine stroke cycle. You’ll learn why VVT-i engines are especially reliant on the sensor’s feedback to function. You’ll understand different sensor designs and how they work thanks to illustrations. We’ll also delve into the advantages and disadvantages of both types of camshaft sensor.

What Is a Crankshaft Position Sensor?

The crankshaft position sensor measures where the crankshaft is in relation to the “Top Dead Centre” (TDC) position. We’ll explain how the crankshaft sensor works and illustrate how the ECU interprets the signal from the sensor. You’ll learn how the crank position sensor is especially important for vehicles with stop/start systems. As the sensor location can vary depending on the manufacturer, we will show you images of a few different configurations.

Why are these sensors so important?

You’ll discover why these sensors are so critical to proper engine functioning and what can go wrong when they malfunction. We’ll explain the relationship between these sensors and the ECU and their role in engine timing and fuel injection. You’ll learn about the important relationship between the two sensors and engine synchronisation.

Troubleshooting

If you are working on a vehicle you suspect may have a faulty camshaft sensor or crankshaft position sensor, this webinar will help you troubleshoot common symptoms of faulty sensors. We will explain how a defective sensor can cause these symptoms, and we’ll also provide the diagnostic fault codes you’re likely to find on a vehicle with a faulty sensor. After the webinar, you can download documents on tips and tricks for working with these sensors.
